Shaukat Aziz, Former Prime Minister Of Pakistan, To Address The Asean 100 Leadership Forum 2008

His Excellency Mr Shaukat Aziz, former Prime Minister of Pakistan has confirmed to participate in this year’s ASEAN 100 Leadership Forum in Manila, Philippines on 15-16 October 2008.

Mr Aziz is scheduled to address the topic of “Economic Stewardship in Turbulent Times: How Can Leaders Cope with Rapid Change?” Mr Aziz brings to the Forum his firsthand story and important lessons from his wealth of experience in leading Pakistan’s economic turnaround at a time of great and sometime grave challenges.

Mr Aziz served as the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan from 28 August 2004 to 15 November 2007 after having been elected as Member of the National Assembly and the Leader of the House. He relinquished the office of the Prime Minister on completion of the five-year tenure of the National Assembly.

Prior to becoming the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr Aziz held the portfolio of Finance Minister from November 1999. He was also responsible for Economic Affairs, Planning and Development, Revenue and Statistics Divisions. During this period, Mr Aziz embarked on an ambitious programme of economic stabilization and structural reform, which helped revive the sagging economy of the country.

In the General Elections of October 2002, Mr Aziz was elected as Senator and continued as Finance Minister, which was an endorsement by the elected government of his agenda of economic reform. He won international acclaim and recognition as the main architect of Pakistan's economic reform and turnaround. In 2001 Mr Aziz was declared as “Finance Minister of the Year” by Euro Money and Bankers Magazine.

As Head of Government, Mr Aziz implemented comprehensive structural reforms in all walks of national life, which have strengthened the economy, improved governance and put the country on a path of sustained high growth.

As Prime Minister, Mr Aziz chaired the Cabinet as well as Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet, National Economic Council, and Cabinet Committees on Privatization, Agriculture, Social Sectors and Regulatory Bodies.

Mr Aziz co-chaired the United Nations Secretary-General’s High Level Panel on the United Nations System-wide Coherence in the areas of development, humanitarian assistance and the environment. The recommendations of the Panel for a One UN Programme are under implementation on a pilot basis in eight countries including Pakistan.
In recognition of his services for promoting peace and cooperation in Asia and the world at large, the House of Representatives of the Philippines conferred the highest award of the Congressional Medal of Achievement upon Mr Aziz in 2006.

In recognition of his visionary leadership and contribution as Finance Minister and Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Institute of Business Administration University of Karachi, Pakistan conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) upon Mr Aziz in 2005.

Prior to his entry into politics, Mr. Aziz had a prolific career in global finance and international banking spanning over 30 years and numerous countries. He began his professional career in 1969 on joining Citibank in Karachi.

The ASEAN 100 Leadership Forum is high-level meeting of minds of the best and brightest next-generation leaders who will shape the future of ASEAN.  This leadership gathering focuses on open discussion and debate on key opportunities and foremost challenges facing the region, and where ASEAN is headed.

The 2008 Forum will bring together more than 200 leaders from business, government and civil society from across ASEAN under the theme “The Challenge of Leadership in Turbulent Times.”

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines has confirmed as this year’s Guest of Honour, to deliver the Opening Keynote Address and engage in dialogue with the Forum.
